Music Program Overview

The purpose of all music courses in the Northport-East Northport Schools is to develop musical literacy. As music educators, we believe all students have the potential to learn and enjoy music. Studies show that music helps students become better thinkers, develop higher-order skills, and increase desire to learn. The Northport-East Northport School District is committed to excellence in music education. Strings classes begin in the upper elementary grades with students receiving instruction two days a week. Daily instruction for credit is offered in the middle and high schools that are vertically aligned and closely associated with the feeder elementary schools. String orchestra classes are taught by itinerant teachers, all of which are licensed music educators. String orchestra teachers are assigned to multiple programs, most visiting from one to three different schools in the course of a week. Full orchestra experience is expected in secondary schools in conjunction with their concert band programs.
