Dear Northport Middle School Community,

Welcome back to the 2020-2021 school year. Dr. Brown and I are thrilled to open up Northport Middle School and continue the important work of providing a developmentally responsive middle-level education for each of our children.

Middle school is a vital bridge between elementary school and high school—it is also a period when young people, often for the first time in their lives, begin actively seeking a sense of purpose and place. It is our job to provide them with these opportunities, while also keeping them engaged, challenged and supported. Our children are gifts with limitless potential. Through the efforts of our entire school community, we can help them to develop their own unique skills and talents and prepare them for continued success far beyond their early adolescent years.

A primary vehicle through which we accomplish this growth and development is our interdisciplinary teams. There are several pillars to effective teaming—among them are
1) students sharing a common set of interdisciplinary teachers for all core classes; 2) teachers working in close physical proximity to one another, enabling greater collaboration; 3) teachers and counselors having regularly scheduled team meetings during a common planning time. This daily face-to-face interaction facilitates early intervention; 4) and perhaps, most importantly, teachers sharing a philosophy about how a developmentally responsive middle-level curriculum is delivered. Our goal is social, emotional, and academic growth for all students.

NMS is indeed full of hope and optimism that anything is possible for our students, and when parents, students, teachers, counselors, and administrators partner, anything IS possible.

Wishing all members of our school community a great year,

Tim Hoss
Principal

Addendum:
Welcome to Northport Middle School’s website. Northport Middle School is located on the north shore of Long Island, about 45 minutes east of New York City. We currently have approximately 530 sixth, seventh, and eighth graders enrolled for the 2020-2021 school year. We have developed an interdisciplinary and hands-on approach to learning and every grade is teamed for English Language Arts, math, science and social studies. There is also a special education inclusion model in all three grades.

We have an Advisory Program (Housegroup) which features a small number of students meeting daily with a faculty member. We work hard to guarantee that every child is known by at least one adult who is not in an evaluative relationship.

We believe we have a great school because we have great students, great staff and great parents. Students describe their time at our school as academically challenging but also exciting and fun. At Northport Middle School, we encourage and promote curiosity, creativity and love of learning. Academic growth and personal growth are considered equally important.

If you walk through our building, you will be impressed by the sense of pride that pervades our school. Our staff and students work diligently to insure that the hallmarks of pride and respect remain steadfast.
